Helpful hints
Naming:
Naming is easy and hard at the same time. A good place to find great names is to use a fantasy name generator, or look up a list of baby or pet names. I try to find a name that matches my character's personality, or maybe even a name that means something very dear to that character...the possibilities are endless.
Personality:
Sometimes to truly understand a character, you need to get in their skin and see how they feel. Personality has a lot to do with your character's needs and history. If your character was abused by humans his whole life, then maybe he would have a unstable personality when he was around them...think about how you would feel yourself.
Appearance:
People tell you that looks don't matter...and they are right. When I role-play with someone, I don't really pay much attention the other character looks; in fact, most of the time I don't even remember. What I do remember about is their personality and how they treated my character... My strategy is: simple design, complex personality.
Goals:
Most of the time, we don't even think about goals in our role-play, but they are there. Whether it's the heart-stopper trying to get the girl to fall in love with him or a character dedicated to finding her real parents or even just the wolf in the arctic storm, trying to find food, shelter, and learning to survive. The goals are there...find them, and use them to push your role-play further along.
I hope these simple guidelines have helped you a bit.
Thanks Bunches,
Lotica.
